The Organization

The Vermont Council for Gifted Education (VCGE) is a non-profit organization of educators, parents, and others who recognize the need to provide appropriate education and support for gifted and talented students. VCGE works actively on the local, state, and national levels to help educators and parents foster the growth and development of children and youth who have exceptional abilities, talents, and needs. 

The Mission of VCGE

In 1984, the Vermont Council for Gifted Education was founded to:

Promote appropriate education for gifted students in Vermont;

Provide for professional growth among members;

Advocate for gifted students; and

Provide leadership in gifted education.

The Council's goals include:

·         Adoption of gifted and talented teacher/coordinator certification endorsement;

·         Parent support through regional meetings and groups;

·         Educational outreach;

·         Statewide public forums on gifted education;

·         Promotion of awareness of provisions for gifted and talented students in Act 157 (formerly Act 230)

·         Passage of Senate Bill #266, defining gifted children; this definition is now Vermont law (Sec. 1. 16 V.S.A. § 13).

·         Passage of Senate Bill #127, extending the benefits of the educational support team and system to gifted and talented students; signed into law in 1998 (Sec. 1. 16 V.S.A. § 2902 as amended).
