VCGE AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

w        The Nicholas Green Award for students in grades 3 -6.  Deadline for applications is
1 March 2008.

NON-VCGE AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

w        For high school seniors, check out the Davidson Fellows program.

w        For profoundly gifted students aged 4 – 16, the Davidson Young Scholars provides professional help and resources to develop and implement a personal action plan to help meet the needs of these students.

CONTESTS

w        Design TASC – Technology and Science Connection Competition, sponsored by the UVM engineering department.  Teams of 5 students compete to design, build, and test a device to perform a specified task.  The competition is held each fall.  

w        Destination Imagination offers creative problem solving competitions on the state and global level. Problems are published in the late summer for students to work on until mid-winter when the state competition is held. State finalists in each age level and problem go on to the global finals. w        Odyssey of the Mind offers creative problem solving competitions at the regional, state, and world level. Students select a problem to work on over the course of several months before the regional competition in late winter. State winners for each problem and age level may go to the world competition. w        Intel Science Talent Search - America's oldest and most highly regarded science contest for high school seniors.  The Science Talent Search provides incentive and an arena to complete an original research project and have it recognized by a national jury of highly regarded professional scientists.  Top awards range from a $100,000 four-year scholarship to $5,000 scholarships.  Each of the 300 students named a Semifinalist receives a $1,000 award for their outstanding science research.  Deadline for entry is generally in November.  For more information and for an entry form, contact Intel Science Talent Search, 1719 N Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036-2888; phone, 202-785-2255; fax 202-785-1243; Web site: http://www.sciserv.org/sts/.

w        The New England Math League has been a very effective tool in the teaching of higher-level math skills. Available for grades 4-12, the test, which is administered in March, has great appeal for all students, especially those who love competition. (New England Math League; P.O. w        For middle school students, MATHCOUNTS is a great way to practice and develop math skills.  This is one of very few middle school accomplishments that are appropriate to include on college applications!

w        Schools who are affiliated with the Vermont Principal's Association  may register for the state Spelling Competition. Held annually in the fall, the contest includes opportunities for spellers in grades 5/6 and grades 7/8. (VPA Spelling Bee; 2 Prospect St.; Montpelier, VT; 05602; (802)229-0547)

w        Like to play with LegosŪ?  Do you like to program?  Then maybe you’d like to build a robot and program it to perform specific tasks.  First Lego League may be the event for you if you are 14 and under. 

w        If you are really into robots, check out the First Robotics Competition.  Other robotic competitions (some may not be in Vermont, but you could start your own!) can be found at this site.

w        How about exploring the past?  Do you like to do historical research?  Then History Day is for you.

w        If you are studying Latin, attend UVM’s Latin Day to test your knowledge of this classical language.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

w        The Governor’s Institute of Vermont, “an intensive college learning experience for Vermont’s high school students.”

w        Kid’s College is a non-profit organization offering educational workshops that challenge an individual’s potential.  Small, hands-on classes are offered throughout the year.  Classes are held in Manchester, Nashua, Merimack and Concord, MA.

w        Vermont Academy of Science and Technology is for high school seniors interested in math, science and technology who wish to complete their high school career while completing the first year of college at the same time.

w        Simon’s Rock College is designed specifically for students of high school age.  Students typically enter after completing 10th or 11th grade and work toward either an Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts.
