Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award

The Vermont Council for Gifted Education is pleased to announce the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) -- Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award.  This award, which includes a certificate and a $500 US Savings Bond, will be made in every state to a student who is between grades 3 and 6 who has distinguished him/herself in academics, leadership, or the arts.  VCGE, an affiliate of the NAGC, is coordinating the Award Program in Vermont.

The Nicholas Green Foundation was established by Maggie and Reg Green to honor the memory of their seven-year old son, Nicholas, who was killed in a drive-by shooting while visiting Italy in 1994.  The Greens started the Distinguished Student Award because they felt it was important to recognize gifts and talents in children who are now at the age that Nicholas was when he died.  It is believed that this Award Program will not only stimulate children to achieve to their fullest, potential, but also that it will highlight high-ability students and draw attention to the educational needs of our nation’s gifted and talented students.

An Award will be made in each state to one student for the 2006-2007 school year.  Award recipients must be between grades 3 and 6 and can achieve excellence in any area of endeavor -- visual or performing arts, academic achievement, and / or leadership.

Students may nominate themselves or be nominated by parents, teachers, students or community/civic groups. In addition to the application form, applicants must submit a letter of recommendation, and a composition about why they feel their effort is important and how they got interested in the area for which they are being nominated. The composition must respond to the following questions:

1.      What is the activity or interest area for which the student is being nominated;

2.      How did the student become interested/involved in the activity;

3.      What impact has the activity had on the student and on others; and

4.      How have the student's future plans and goals been affected by this activity or interest area.

The students are free to describe their interests and accomplishments in any manner, with no specific word or limit or style. A letter of recommendation must also be submitted. The letter of recommendation must be from someone other than a nominee's family member such as a teacher or principal, explaining why the student is deserving of the award, what sets the student apart from others and how the nominee is impacting others.

Application materials can be found here or requested (include a self-addressed, stamped envelope) from Pete Sandon, 4 Lang Drive, Essex Jct, VT  05452. Completed applications should be sent to the address above, postmarked by 1 March 2008. The winner will be announced in April 2008.
